How to Write Effective Midjourney Prompts

Unlike conversational AI models like ChatGPT, Midjourney does not understand grammar, sentence structure, or polite requests. It operates on a tokenized system, meaning it breaks down your prompt into individual words and phrases, assigning weight and importance based on their position and clarity.

The most effective Midjourney prompts follow a specific structural anatomy:

[Subject] + [Environment/Setting] + [Lighting] + [Camera/Angle] + [Art Style/Medium] + [Parameters]

By organizing your thoughts into this framework, you ensure that the AI prioritizes the core subject while accurately applying the stylistic and technical details you desire.

Essential Tips for Better Prompts

Be Specific, Not Wordy

Instead of 'a really big scary dog that looks mean', use 'massive aggressive rottweiler, baring teeth'. Use strong adjectives.

Define the Medium

Always tell Midjourney what it's making. Is it a '35mm photograph', an 'oil painting', a '3D render', or a 'pencil sketch'?

Master Lighting

Lighting makes or breaks an image. Use terms like 'cinematic lighting', 'golden hour', 'volumetric fog', or 'neon cyberpunk glow'.

Order Matters

Words at the beginning of your prompt have a much stronger influence on the final image than words at the end.

Good vs. Bad Prompts

Seeing the difference between a basic request and an engineered prompt is the fastest way to learn.

The Bad Prompt

/imagine prompt: a picture of a futuristic city with flying cars

Why it fails: It's too vague. Midjourney will guess the art style, lighting, and composition, resulting in a generic, flat image.

The Good Prompt

/imagine prompt: sprawling cyberpunk metropolis at night, neon signs reflecting in rain puddles, flying vehicles leaving light trails, cinematic lighting, hyper-detailed, 8k resolution, unreal engine 5 render --ar 16:9 --v 6.0

Why it works: It defines the exact aesthetic (cyberpunk), the lighting (night, neon, cinematic), the medium (unreal engine 5 render), and the aspect ratio.

Midjourney Parameters & Settings

Parameters are special commands added to the very end of a prompt that change how an image generates. They always start with a double hyphen (--).

--ar [ratio]
Aspect RatioChanges the dimensions of the image. Common ratios are --ar 16:9 (widescreen), --ar 9:16 (vertical/mobile), and --ar 1:1 (square default).
--v [version]
VersionForces Midjourney to use a specific model version. Currently, --v 6.0 is the latest and most photorealistic.
--niji 6
Niji ModelSwitches to Midjourney's specialized anime and illustrative model, perfect for 2D art styles.
--stylize [0-1000]
StylizeControls how strongly Midjourney's default aesthetic is applied. --s 50 is low (closer to your prompt), --s 750 is very high (more artistic).
--no [item]
Negative PromptingTells the AI what NOT to include. Example: --no trees, people, text.

Advanced Prompt Techniques

Once you master the basics, you can use advanced techniques to gain granular control over your generations.

Prompt Weighting (::)

You can tell Midjourney which parts of your prompt are more important by using double colons followed by a number. For example, hot dog::2 space suit::1 will ensure the image looks much more like a dog than a space suit.

Iterative Refinement

Never expect the perfect image on the first try. Professional AI artists use an iterative process: generate a base image, identify what's missing, adjust the prompt, and reroll. Use the V1-V4 buttons in Discord to create variations of an image that is close to your vision.
